How Play, Conversation, and Real Life Grow Readers

Conversation, song, read alouds, play, and rich experiences are key to developing language skills. In this session designed for families with children , we'll discuss simple, short specific activities (no prep, no specialized materials) that will contribute to strong literacy behaviours for children under the age of 4. There will be a special focus on activities that can be done on video chats with grandparents or other caring adults and on side-by-side activities that can be done at the kitchen table while you work. This course is designed for parents and family caregivers with children under 4. ECEs and childcare providers are welcome to join, but there are no Professional Development certificates issued for this workshop.

What I'm talking about...

I believe that we all learn best in connection with others and through real life experiences.

That optimal reading habits are developed cuddled up on the couch or while reading road or trail markers on an adventure. 

That there is no race to win on the path to fluent reading ability. We are ALL readers already- and that through play and conversation young children can develop lifelong skills and love of reading.

That parents and other caregivers are exceptionally well suited to support children in their reading because of the intense bonds and trust that exist in those relationships.

I am a BC-certified teacher specialized in Early Childhood Education, have taught Kindergarten through Grade 7, and am currently supporting my children in their own home learning journeys. My approach is one of love, acceptance, fun, and freedom.
